Mobile Mammogram Events save lives

A convenient way for women 40+ to get screened without leaving the community

A Mammogram Could Save Your Life—Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Skip It

If you’re a woman 40 or older, you’ve probably heard about mammograms before. Maybe your doctor has recommended one, or you’ve seen reminders pop up on social media. But if you’ve never had one—or it’s been a while—you might be wondering: Do I really need a mammogram?

It’s easy to put it off. Life is busy, and if you feel fine, it might not seem like a priority. But here’s the truth: Breast cancer often develops without noticeable symptoms at first. By the time a lump can be felt, the cancer may have already progressed. That’s why regular mammograms are crucial—they catch breast cancer early, when it’s most treatable.

On April 2nd, a mobile mammogram unit will be at White Mountain Regional Medical Center’s new clinic. This is a rare opportunity for women in our community to get screened without having to travel out of town. If you’re still on the fence, let’s break it down:

What is a Mammogram, and Why Does It Matter?

A mammogram is a specialized X-ray that takes images of breast tissue. It can detect tiny changes or abnormalities that aren’t visible or palpable, often years before a lump forms.

Medical studies show that regular mammograms reduce breast cancer deaths by 30-40% in women aged 40 and older. That’s a huge impact. The earlier breast cancer is detected, the easier it is to treat, and the better the chances of survival.

Consider this:

  • Most women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of the disease.
  • Most breast lumps are not cancerous, but only a mammogram can confirm that.
  • Skipping mammograms for years increases the risk of late-stage detection, when treatment is more invasive and less effective.

Who Should Get a Mammogram?

The American Cancer Society recommends that women aged 40 and older get a mammogram every year. If you’re in this age group, this event is for you!

Even if you feel fine and have no family history, you are still at risk. In fact, the majority of breast cancer cases occur in women with no known risk factors. The only way to know for sure is through screening.

If you haven’t had a mammogram in the past year—or have never had one—this is your chance.

What to Expect at Your Mammogram Appointment

If fear of the unknown has been holding you back, let’s walk through what actually happens.

  1. Check-In: When you arrive, a technician will explain the process and answer any questions.
  2. The Exam: You’ll stand in front of a machine, and a technician will place each breast on a flat surface for imaging. The machine will compress the breast for a few seconds to capture clear X-rays.
  3. Mild Discomfort, But Quick: Some women feel pressure, but the entire procedure takes less than 20 minutes—that’s faster than waiting in a coffee drive-thru!
  4. Afterward: Your images will be reviewed by a radiologist, and results will be sent to your doctor. If anything unusual is found, further testing may be recommended.

Most women receive normal results, but if something is detected, finding it early means more treatment options and better outcomes.

Common Concerns About Mammograms—And the Truth

 “I don’t have symptoms, so I don’t need one.”
Breast cancer can develop silently, with no symptoms for years. A mammogram finds what you can’t see or feel.

“I don’t have time.”
The whole process takes less than 30 minutes. That’s shorter than a lunch break, and it could save your life.

“I don’t have a family history of breast cancer.”
Most breast cancer cases occur in women with no family history. Screening is the only way to know.

“It’s too expensive.”
Many insurance plans cover mammograms at little or no cost. Call us to discuss options.

Why This Event Matters for Our Community

For years, there have been no local mammography services available on this side of the mountain. Women have had to travel out of town—sometimes hours away—to get this essential screening. That means many women simply don’t go.

This April 2nd, we’re changing that. A mobile mammogram unit is coming to our new clinic, making it easy and convenient for you to get screened right here in your own community.
