Know Your Options for Imaging Referrals

What Is an Ultrasound?

Ultrasound, or sonography, uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of internal organs, tissues, and blood flow. It’s a painless and non-invasive procedure that’s commonly used across a wide range of medical specialties.

What Can Ultrasound Be Used For?

Ultrasound is highly versatile and safe, making it ideal for many diagnostic applications.

Pregnancy & Women's Health

Fetal monitoring, uterine and ovarian evaluations, and early pregnancy confirmation.

Abdominal Imaging

Gallbladder, liver, pancreas, kidneys, and bladder assessments.

Vascular Studies

Evaluates blood flow in veins and arteries to detect clots or blockages.

What to Expect During Your Ultrasound

Ultrasound procedures are simple and do not require incisions, needles, or exposure to radiation.

  • Preparation: Depending on the type of ultrasound, you may be asked to fast or arrive with a full bladder.
  • The Scan: A technologist will apply a warm gel to your skin and move a handheld device (transducer) over the area being examined.
  • Duration: Most ultrasounds take between 20 to 45 minutes.
  • Results: A radiologist will interpret the images and send a report to your provider.

Is Ultrasound Right for You?

Ultrasound is often the preferred first step in diagnosing and monitoring conditions due to its safety, comfort, and accessibility. It’s especially valuable in evaluating organs, soft tissues, and vascular health.
