You Have an Imaging Order — Now What?
Learn what it means to receive an imaging referral and how to take charge of where you go for your scan.
What Is an Imaging Order?
An imaging order (or referral) is a document from your doctor that requests a specific diagnostic test—such as an X-ray, MRI, or CT scan. This order gives you the ability to schedule the scan at a licensed imaging facility of your choice. It does not lock you in to a specific provider or hospital.
You Have a Choice
Many patients don’t realize that they have the right to choose where their imaging is performed. Even if your doctor recommends a certain place, you’re under no obligation to use that location. It’s your scan—and your decision.
- You are allowed to take your order anywhere—as long as the facility accepts it and offers the service.
- Insurance will still cover your test when done at a qualified facility.
- You can compare pricing, convenience, and comfort when choosing a location.
How to Talk With Your Provider
It’s not always easy to bring up a different facility—but it’s absolutely okay to do so. Your provider wants what’s best for you, and you are in control of your healthcare decisions. Here are some ways to open the conversation:
“Can you send this order to WMRMC?”
This is a simple, direct way to make your preference clear.
“I’d like to go somewhere more convenient for me.”
Location, timing, or cost can all be valid reasons for your choice.
“Do you mind if I have this scan done at WMRMC?”
Most providers are happy to accommodate a patient’s request.
